Happy new year! PHP is still critical to the internet!

Whatever new trends or fads 2025 kicks up, we're staying focused on the technologies that the web can't run without. That's why we still love PHP.

It's January, so all your open tabs and unread emails are probably all about Ten trends that you need to follow in 2025, or How the new year will change EVERYTHING about being a developer. Admit it: You won't read most of them. All this manufactured excitement is actually kind of tiring.

There are still 357 days left, but here's a spoiler alert: This year, almost everything about web development will be very much like it was last year, and the year before that, and the year before that. And you know what? That's a very good thing.

Because, fundamentally, most of the web is built on a stable and reliable base. Technologies like Linux, Apache, MySQL or MariaDB, and PHP. LAMP stack may not be in the headlines, but like a really good water pipe or highway it goes unnoticed because it's so reliable.

Your antidote to trend-chasing: Celebrating PHP

Don't get us wrong here. Web development is far from static. Frameworks evolve, systems grow and fall, and customers ask for new things. New hosting solutions appear, too, of course! But in most cases, all of this change happens in the world of LAMP and our favourite piece of that stack: PHP.

Believe it or not, PHP will turn 30 this year. And the worldwide web of 2025 couldn't live without it. According to W3Techs, around three-quarters of all websites use PHP. Languages like JavaScript and Ruby are its closest competitors (without really being that close at all), and newer options like Rust, Golang and Kotlin all have their place. But none of those places are anywhere near as big or as important as PHP's.

So start your 2025 to-do list with the same item as us: Say a quiet word of thanks for PHP, and find new ways to be good to it.

New ways to be good to PHP

Webslice is here for PHP developers. We're all about the web as it is now - the bits of it that you're working on today, and the websites that you're running for clients and visitors right now. Countless developers work with PHP, and they all deserve to be as productive and efficient as possible.

We've started the year with our first appearance on Hosting Advice, where we talked about things that make PHP development easier and more productive. On Webslice Containers, that includes things like automatic upgrades and developer-focused features like cloning and syncing containers.

Meanwhile for Webslice Serverless it means taking a whole lot of the benefits that AWS promises, and making them easily accessible to devs who don't have the time to learn serverless architecture from the ground up. Serverless PHP is tricky to get right, so we're doing the grunt work so that developers can shine.

Okay, fine, here's one amazing new thing to look out for in 2025

Webslice Serverless is very close to public beta. We're proud to be working on something new that will make it easier for the web of 2025 to run today's technology - PHP - in a new way.
